Bay windows are characterized by a central fixed window with two side windows angled outward. The central window is typically larger and fixed, while the side windows are often casement or double-hung, allowing for ventilation. The combination of these three windows creates a protruding bay or alcove.

Bow windows are similar to bay windows but feature a curved or arched design. They consist of multiple windows of equal size, typically casement or double-hung, arranged in a gentle curve to create a rounded projection from the exterior wall.
