ENERGY STAR 7.0 is Here!
Upcoming changes to the ENERGY STAR program are set to provide a significant jump in efficiency and savings for homeowners who purchase ENERGY STAR rated windows and doors.
The ENERGY STAR program is a voluntary program administered by the EPA in the United States. It strives to promote energy efficiency and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by encouraging the use of energy-efficient products and practices.
Generally, products that meet the ENERGY STAR requirements are expected to be significantly more energy-efficient compared to standard models on the market. To earn the ENERGY STAR label, manufacturers must ensure their products meet specific criteria set by the EPA.
It’s important to note that the ENERGY STAR program regularly updates its requirements to keep up with advancements in technology and to ensure that certified products continue to deliver significant energy savings. The release of ENERGY STAR 7.0 is a result of a collaboration between the EPA, the US Department of Energy and other agencies.
The ENERGY STAR performance criteria for windows and doors is based on four different climate zones. Qualifying windows for the Northern zones must significantly lower the heat flow (U-factor) out of the house. Products made for the Southern zones must achieve a lower Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC).
The NY/NJ/CT region is part of the Northern and North Central Zones
Improving the performance of windows is an important part of an ENERGY STAR Home Upgrade because it reduces the energy waste associated with a leaky home and improves comfort. Windows and storm windows that earn the ENERGY STAR label meet performance criteria that are better than basic building code requirements and vary by climate.
