You may have heard these terms, or even seen them on a product label or brochure. But what do they mean and how do they affect the energy efficiency of your home?
Here’s some valuable intel on window features like double or triple glazing, low-emissivity (low-e) coatings, gas fills, and thermal breaks:
Double or Triple Glazing: Double or triple glazing refers to the number of glass panes used in a window unit, separated by a layer of air or gas. The additional panes improve insulation and reduce heat transfer. The gaps between the panes act as insulating pockets, minimizing the transfer of heat from the outside to the inside or vice versa. This helps maintain a more stable and comfortable indoor temperature while reducing energy loss.
Low-Emissivity (Low-E) Coatings: Low-e coatings are thin, transparent layers applied to the glass surface to minimize heat transfer. They work by reflecting infrared light (heat energy) while allowing visible light to pass through. This means they can help keep the interior cooler in hot climates or warmer in cold climates by reducing the amount of heat that enters or escapes through the windows. Low-e coatings also help protect against UV radiation, which can fade furniture and flooring.
Gas Fills (Argon or Krypton): Between the glass panes of double or triple glazed windows, inert gases like argon or krypton can be used to enhance insulation. These gases are denser than air, reducing the conduction of heat through the window. Argon is commonly used as it is affordable and provides effective insulation. Krypton, although more expensive, has even better insulating properties and is used in windows with narrower airspaces.
Thermal Breaks: A thermal break is a non-conductive material inserted between the inner and outer sections of a window frame or sash. It interrupts the flow of heat or cold through the frame, minimizing heat transfer. Thermal breaks help reduce energy loss and condensation, contributing to improved energy efficiency. They are often used in aluminum windows to enhance their insulation properties.
